Description
In 1564 Pope Pio IV wanted to enlarge the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna and he asked Giambologna to create the monumental bronze sculpture of Neptune to put it in the center of a big new fountain, placed in the exact point that was the center of the antique Roman town. Is an incredible example of Italian Mannerism.
The mold used to execute the bronze work using the lost-wax casting process was produced directly on the original by Ferdinando Marinelli Sr., and is currently in the collection of the Fonderia Artistica Ferdinando Marinelli
